Would you risk going to Turkey in 2016?

Turkey - would you risk it?

Just a few years ago, we confidently booked holidays to resorts in Turkey or Egypt and spent romantic weekends in Paris without a second thought.

Now, terrorism has ripped apart Brussels and Paris , downed a plane in Egypt and stalks the streets of Turkey . And tourists often seem to be the target.

As a result, we’re already piling into ‘safer’ destinations. Thomas Cook has announced a flurry of demand for holidays in Spain and the surrounding islands, while others are booking holidays in farflung places like the US and Cuba.

But even if you’re determined to holiday like usual, it’s worth taking some precautions before you book.

First, you need to know that most insurance policies will not cover you if you travel somewhere against the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office .

This doesn’t happen very often, but the FCO has warned against all but essential travel to the once-popular Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Second, think about what happens if the situation changes after you book. Holiday operators that are ATOL-protected must get you home if something happens on your trip. If you haven’t gone yet, you can get a refund.

Third, check your travel insurance and holiday package small print. Find out what happens if you decide to cancel your holiday because of an unexpected event. For example, after the Paris attacks, Eurostar refused to refund travellers who wanted to change their future holiday plans.

If you decide to go to somewhere in the Americas, don't forget about the Zika virus, which can affect pregnant women.

Of course, every country’s different. So here is our at-a-glance guide to popular holiday destinations.
